JOB TITLE:  Band Director

DEPARTMENT:  Fine Arts

REPORTS TO: Executive Director of Fine Arts and Director of Bands

FLSA STATUS: Exempt

MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Education: Bachelor's degree in Music Education or related field required. Master's degree preferred. Valid Oklahoma teaching certificate appropriate for assignment required.

Experience: Experience teaching instrumental music and directing band ensembles preferred. Experience with marching band, concert band, and other instrumental groups preferred.

Skills: Strong conducting and instructional skills in instrumental music. Knowledge of band literature, music theory, and instrumental pedagogy. Ability to organize rehearsals, performances, and large ensemble activities. Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills. Ability to collaborate effectively with students, parents, staff, and community members.

 

SUMMARY: Directs and coordinates the school band program to develop students' individual and ensemble performance skills, musicianship, and appreciation of music. Provides instruction in instrumental music while promoting excellence in performance, student participation, and program growth.

  • Plan and conduct rehearsals for band classes and instrumental ensembles.

     
  • Prepare and direct performances including concerts, contests, festivals, and community events.

     
  • Teach proper instrumental techniques, music reading skills, and ensemble performance practices.

     
  • Select high-quality band literature representing a variety of musical styles and historical periods.

     
  • Recruit and retain students to maintain balanced instrumentation and strong enrollment within the band program.

     
  • Coordinate marching band rehearsals, performances, and related activities as required.

     
  • Organize and supervise student participation in band events, competitions, and travel activities.

     
  • Maintain inventory and care of instruments, uniforms, music library, and equipment.

     
  • Collaborate with other district band directors to ensure continuity of the band program across grade levels.

     
  • Communicate regularly with students, parents, and administrators regarding program activities and expectations.

     
  • Participate in school and district activities and professional development opportunities.

     
  • Support booster organizations and fundraising efforts as appropriate.

     
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the principal or Executive Director of Fine Arts.

     

 

ESSENTIAL BEHAVIOR: Ability to use sound judgment in any situation. Ability to adapt to changing assignments and respond appropriately to communication received. Ability to project a professional district image through in-person, phone, and electronic interaction. Ability to build and foster harmonious rapport and work cooperatively with District staff, students, parents, and the public while achieving the objectives and goals of the position. Ability to handle problematic and/or difficult situations professionally by communicating with the appropriate person.

 

ATTENDANCE STATEMENT: Able to be in attendance for assigned responsibilities with 95% attendance.

 

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS: Primarily indoor classroom and rehearsal environments with occasional outdoor rehearsals and performances. Evening and weekend commitments required for performances, competitions, rehearsals, and travel.
