General Summary:

A success coach motivates students toward their academic goals by providing mentoring, feedback, and referrals while tracking and documenting student progress. The Success Coach works as a member of a team to: Support student success and progression to graduation; provide proactive individualized student outreach to students who are identified at risk; connect students to relevant campus and community resources; provide academic coaching and support for students on an ongoing basis; establish professional academic relationships with students; monitor and track progress of students; and maintain effective communication with faculty and staff in support of student success.

The Success Coach is a proactive, student-centered professional dedicated to increasing retention and graduation rates. This role is a member of a team that manages the Early Alert System, serving as the primary responder when faculty or staff identify students facing academic, personal, or financial hurdles.

The coach acts as a bridge between institutional expectations and the student’s lived experience, providing personalized intervention strategies.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Regularly review alerts submitted through the campus management system regarding attendance, low grades, or needed student supports.
  • Initiate immediate contact with students via phone, email, text, and in-person meetings to assess the root cause of the alert.
  • Maintain a caseload of high-priority students, tracking progress from the initial alert to the resolution.
  • Collaborate with students to create improvement plans that address academic warning, probation or suspension to address student needs to improve time management, improving basic student skills and get back on track in their degree plan.
  • Help coordinate student success services for students.
  • Provide proactive, individualized outreach to students based on identified risk factors (including academic, financial, and socio-emotional), and assist in developing individual plans for success.
  • Refer and connect students with relevant college and community resources, as well as coordinate with college faculty and staff regarding additional outreach and support.
  • Case-manage the academic progress of individual students, maintaining consistent and confidential records of individual student data.
  • Maintain knowledge of current and evidence-based student success/retention models and practices.
  • Work closely with academic domain within the college and provide backup advising.
  • Contribute professionally by serving on college committees and working groups.
  • Engage in campus life, events and meetings, sometimes outside of the regular work day, including New Student Orientation, Bison Stampede and In-Service.
  • Support and help with the Department of Academic Success events such as HiSET Graduation in June and December, and other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Social Work, Counseling, Psychology, or related area.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide individual and group counseling or advising.
  • Proven interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to effectively, professionally and tactfully interact with others.
  • Ability to write and communicate clearly and effectively via email or telephone.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as a member of student services in the Academic Success department, as well as other campus-wide teams.
  • Strong, overall organizational skills and attention to detail, with an ability to plan and manage multiple projects concurrently.
  • Ability to maintain recordkeeping systems and procedures.
  • Commitment to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to collect, organize, analyze and report on data, including but not limited to program reports for grants as needed.
  • Computer literacy and ability to quickly learn software applications in support of success coach duties. Applications include J1 and Jenzabar, google apps (docs, sheets, calendar, Gmail) and Microsoft office (word, excel) and ability to learn new programs such as Brightspace to support students.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with the cultures of Séliš, Ksanka, and/or Qlispe’ peoples and working with diverse audiences.
  • Experience working in student retention.
  • Knowledge and experience with Jenzabar and J1.
