Job Description

Job Title: Sheet Metal Mechanic - El Cajon, CA - Immediately Hiring

Job Description

  • This role focuses on precision sheet metal fabrication, including bending, rolling, shearing, punching, and forming to tight tolerances. You will set up and operate a variety of fabrication equipment autonomously, use precision measurement tools to verify dimensions, and produce high-quality parts in accordance with engineering drawings and specifications.

Responsibilities

  • Set up and operate sheet metal fabrication equipment, including shear, CNC turret punch press, punch press, press brake, power roller, resistance seam welder, expander, and related tools.
  • Perform sheet metal bending, rolling, planishing, roll forming, bump forming, and spot or roll welding as required.
  • Fabricate parts to dimensional tolerances specified on engineering drawings, maintaining tight tolerance requirements (approximately 0.030 inch).
  • Use precision measurement tools such as calipers, combo squares, gauges, height gauges, and other instruments to verify part dimensions and quality.
  • Figure shear size and flat pattern layouts from engineering drawings using height gauges and other precision instruments.
  • Check all operations from material gauge and type through shearing, punching, and forming to ensure accuracy and compliance with specifications.
  • Set up machines autonomously and perform 2–3 different setups per day, adjusting as production needs fluctuate.
  • Work on repetitive production runs, making pieces in batches of approximately 20–30 parts while maintaining consistent quality.
  • Work independently and collaboratively with others to develop guidelines for the production of sheet metal assemblies.
  • Perform assembly work, including forming bellows and deburring parts to meet quality and finish standards.
  • Be willing to work at assigned jobs both within and outside the sheet metal department as production needs require.

Essential Skills

  • Hands-on experience in sheet metal fabrication, including bending, rolling, shearing, punching, and forming.
  • Ability to set up and run shear, CNC turret punch press, punch press, press brake, power roller, resistance seam welder, expander, and related equipment.
  • Proficiency using precision measurement tools such as calipers, combo squares, gauges, height gauges, and other precision instruments.
  • Demonstrated ability to work to tight tolerances of approximately 0.030 inch.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings to fabricate parts to specified dimensional tolerances.
  • Experience figuring shear sizes and flat pattern layouts from engineering drawings.
  • Capability to set up machines autonomously and adjust settings to meet production and quality requirements.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to checking material gauge, type, and all forming operations for accuracy.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team in a production environment.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience operating and setting up CNC press brakes and brake presses from manufacturers such as Durma, Wysong, Amada, or Cincinnati.
  • Proficiency in planishing, roll forming, bump forming, and spot or roll welding.
  • Experience with resistance seam welding and forming bellows.
  • Familiarity with deburring processes and basic assembly of sheet metal components.
  • Comfort working on repetitive production runs while maintaining consistent quality standards.

Why Work Here?

  • You join a production environment that values precision craftsmanship, teamwork, and continuous improvement. The role offers the opportunity to work with a wide range of modern fabrication equipment, develop and refine technical skills, and contribute directly to the creation of high-quality sheet metal assemblies. You can expect a stable schedule, exposure to diverse fabrication processes, and the chance to take ownership of your work by setting up and running equipment independently.

Work Environment

  • This is a 2nd shift position, typically working from 4:00 p.m. to 2:30 a.m. The work takes place in a manufacturing and fabrication facility equipped with shear machines, CNC turret punch presses, punch presses, press brakes, power rollers, resistance seam welders, expanders, and related sheet metal tools. Work often involves repetitive production runs, producing batches of approximately 20–30 pieces, with about 2–3 different setups per day depending on production needs. The environment is hands-on and production-focused, requiring regular use of precision measurement tools and close adherence to engineering drawings and dimensional tolerances. You may be assigned tasks both within and outside the sheet metal department based on operational requirements.
