Job Description

An exciting opportunity to report on one of the fastest-growing communities in the American Southwest!

The Rio Rancho Observer is seeking a general news reporter. This weekly print product with a 24/7 online presence covers Sandoval County, a vital part of the Albuquerque metro area, focusing on the communities of Rio Rancho, Corrales, Bernalillo, Santa Ana Pueblo, and Placitas. Responsibilities
  • Produce a minimum of two pieces of original content per day, process press releases as needed, and prepare advanced pieces for the weekend edition.
  • Turn around articles quickly and shift seamlessly between standard news reporting and feature writing.
  • Develop strong relationships with sources across assigned beats and take initiative to follow up on story leads.
  • Analyze data and audience analytics to help determine and refine coverage strategies.
  • Work weekend and evening hours as news events require.

Requirements
  • Strong, clear, and clean writing skills.
  • Ability to communicate with the public in an impartial manner.
  • Strong understanding and application of journalism ethics and standards.
  • Self-starter mindset with the ability to work independently, collaborate with a team, and juggle multiple tasks.
  • Strong copy editing and AP Stylebook knowledge preferred.
  • Photography and video production skills.
  • Experience with word processing software, Google Suite, and web publishing software.
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (particularly InDesign and Photoshop) preferred.
  • Social media experience.
  • Valid driver’s license, safe driving record, and reliable transportation (Required)
